So what's with my homepage?

I tend to like rather spatial and graphical designs for things like note taking and, though I don't usually take the time, I enjoy drawing, so I decided to do something a bit more graphical for the design of the main page of my website.

The design of the main webpage is essentially a graphical site map. Since the contents this website are relatively simple as it is, I see no point in having a more typical outline-form site map. The top menu bar is more comprehensive than the map and serves as an alternate means of navigating the site.

I actually have used the template for the main image map for some time for the web page I created to use as my web browser startpage.

I borrowed (aka "used without permission") at least one of the icons from the program Inspiration, which I have used for school work in the past.

Question: The main page doesn't look good in my browser, why?

Answer: If you can't see the entire "map" in your browser, it could be because I designed this page almost entirely on computers set to 1024x768 resolution or higher and with minimal toolbars in the browser.
When I tried at 800x600, I couldn't see the entire map either. I had to make a call to either abandon my basic design (for the first page) or accept that some people might not see the whole circle. I chose the former. The good news is, at this stage there is nothing on the map that isn't in the links at the top of the page.

Question: The images on the main page don't line up well in the circle, or the center dot is off, why?

Answer: If it's not the screen resolution or browser window size, then I can't say offhand. Send me an email with a screenshot & information about your browser, if you like.

Question: Why does ______ look wierd/wrong/etc. in ______ browser/system/etc.?

Answer: I have designed this site on an Mac using the Firefox & Safari web browsers. I also tested it (although admittedly less extensively) on Firefox & Internet Explorer on Windows XP. If it's looking wierd in one of these environments, please let me know so I can try to figure it out. If you're using a different browser or system, I'd still be interested in knowing, but there are so many different OS's and web browsers that I can't possibly make it look perfect in every one. I am using Cascading Style Sheets, and tables, and javascript which should be supported in almost any modern browser. I've tried to limit my javascript use to formatting and other non-essentials so that the site can easily be used on a portable device. (Testing for portable browsing has been done almost exclusively on a hiptop, and that was a while ago...)
