Martial Arts |
From February 2004 through June of 2005 my wife and I studied Taekwondo under Dr. Jerry P. Galloway, 5th Dan Master of Taekwondo, at his school, Traditional Martial Arts (TMA), then located in northwest Indiana. I advanced to 7th gup (yellow belt w/ green stripe, which is 3 ranks up from white belt). The Galloways (and TMA) relocated to Statesboro, GA in June 2005. We looked into finding a new school, however didn't find one that met our needs. We look forward to getting involved again, especially in a few years when our daughter is old enough to start learning!
The style I've been taught at TMA is called Chun Tong Moo Do, which literally translates as "Traditional Martial Arts." This style was created by Master Galloway, who was trained in the Chayon Ryu style by Grandmaster Kim Soo. It is an eclectic style of Taekwondo that includes elements of Karate, Hapkido and Kung Fu. In Chun Tong Moo Do, a greater emphasis is placed on forms ("hyung" in Korean) and precision, rather than focusing extensively on sparring. We also learned a good deal of self-defense techniques, starting with more basic moves in the beginning ranks and progressing to more advanced moves and Hapkido techniques later on. Master Galloway encouraged us to take part in competitions, although this is by no means the primary emphasis of the style.
At Master Galloway's suggestion, I maintained a Martial Arts Journal.
I also have some pictures of lisa, myself and some other TMA people (including The Galloways) at the 2004 Indiana State Taekwondo Association State Championships here.
